Pipeline integrity monitoring

Texel, Nl

Fluves set up monitoring for an HDPE pipeline buried several meters deep near a sand suppletion operation conducted by dredging company Jan De Nul off the coast of the Dutch Wadden island of Texel. In order to monitor potential movement or tension on the pipeline caused by the increase in sand mass, Fluves installed a surrounding fiber optic sensor network.

The methodology used is based on the Fiber Bragg Grating sensors (FBG) acquired from the Belgian based company Com&Sens.

Fbg Sensors

Along the pipeline, which was subdivided in several measurement sections, the FBG sensors were attached with geotextile as well as monitor anchors. This process allowed the best assessment of the pipeline’s movement and bending and was prototyped and lab-tested with a mock pipeline. During data analysis, the raw data was passed through a deformation calculation, taking into account the elasticity moduli of both fiber and PE-pipeline.
